About the Author
Dr. Masaru Emoto was born in Japan and is a graduate of the Yokahama Municipal University and the Open International University as a Doctor of Alternative Medicine. Dr. Emoto discovered through his research that molecules of water are affected by our thoughts, words, and feelings. Using high-speed photography, Dr. Emoto revealed how crystals formed in frozen water change when specific, concentrated thoughts are directed toward them. He found that water exposed to loving words shows brilliant, complex patterns, but water exposed to negative words forms incomplete, asymmetrical patterns. He is continuing his pioneering research in this field.

BEAUTIFUL yet Incomplete

These cards are strong, waxed, glossy, and sturdy. However, the way they are categorized is somewhat confusing and doesn't make sense. If you are Japanese and understand from the perspective of the philosophy indigenous to the Japanese culture, the categorizing of these may make more sense. I put the individual cards I want to use in a zip lock plastic baggie so when I put my bottle of water on the card, the card surface is preserved without any damage or water damage. I think that just by doing this, and offering a blessing or a prayer or even a positive thought towards the water you drink, just by using your own focused energy to such a goal, makes a difference. Perhaps not so much in taste of the water but mostly in that the energy you created by projecting it to the water also sends a resonance back to you which you can feel through out your day. So basically, what you dish out, you give back. The cards act like a tool to this objective and yields positive effects even if very subtle to some people. I am very sensitive and can feel the difference in the energy field. They are beautiful as well.

The only reason for four stars instead of five is that the definitions and the words used for certain focuses seem strange here and there.
For instance, under the heading of "Wisdom" is a section of cards and one of them says "Soul". And under the heading of "Power" comes cards that also say "Eternity", "Love and Thanks", and "Thank You". Under the heading of "Healing", comes the cards "Lourdes Water",
Right Brain", and "Brain Hado". Where is the Left Brain? And Lourdes Water catagorized along side the Autonomic Nervous System under the healing catagory? And there is the "Thymus" and "Lung" cards under the same heading of "Healing" but there are not the other vital Yin organs like the Liver, Kidneys, Spleen, etc. The definitions are perhaps very limited and do not consider other organs, and or other things we may associate with "Healing". That is why I gave it four stars. The definitions of the catagories seem weird.

I purchased this product on a friends recommendation. It has proven to be very helpful in many settings. One of the most important things is how often I can use these cards to show people the importance of gratitude, parader, and kind words, to ourselves and others. I also enjoy the beautiful photographs. I have, and will continue to recommend these to others.

I recently accepted a new position within my company that required that I be able to read blueprints, primarily mechanical. I haven't really done any training in that vein since I was in high school 24 years ago. Budgets are not evil.

If you're afraid of budgets, read this book. It's written in everyday English, brief, easy to read, and will remove all mystery from budgeting.

Dated, but good on basics

Here's my quicky summary of this book:
1. An overall budget predicts income, expenses, and cash flow.
2. Don't bother building a budget if you're not going to look at actual spending and try to determine the cause of any variances. If the variances come from reasonable causes--as they almost always do--the budget must be changed to reflect the new conditions.
3. Researching and documenting assumptions are the key to good--and justifiable--forecasts and budgets. Don't budget based on pie-in-the-sky sales wishes or broadly-stated percentage increases over previous periods. What's going to increase and why?
4. An expense can be estimated from current and historical information, reasonable growth projections and timing estimates. It should include the effects of current or improved controls (approval processes, expense reports, centralized purchasing, appropriate categorization, etc.).
5. Working capital matters: set aside reserves, collect accounts receivable promptly, plan inventory and capital purchases, use controls. Use a Cash Flow Statement to project cash balances and avoid running out of cash.
6. When a variance occurs, determine whether the problem is due to a false assumption--in which case the budget must be revised--or a failure of controls--in which case, processes may need to be introduced.
This book is a bit dated. It seems unaware of spreadsheets and other computerized financial management tools. Even forgiving that, its proposed forms for changes and documentation seem a bit simplistic and therefore unhelpful.
On the other hand, it's a very good introduction to budgeting, and the main message ("Document your assumptions!!") seems like a great one to learn.

While the book rarely has time to delve into the details - even on topics like Roman History which it covers in far more details

Prof Alderete's course is extremely ambitious in its intent. The execution is quite satisfactory given the large scope.

Covering a few millenia of world history is an extremely difficult exercise - particularly when the major regions were completely disconnected and were worlds of their own. The lecture series effectively sweeps numerous, diverse important developments in engaging ways. While the book rarely has time to delve into the details - even on topics like Roman History which it covers in far more details than any other topic - the sprinkling of good information and insightful analysis is bound to provide something new to all but the experienced experts.

There are some areas in which the series particularly excels. For each major civilization, the lectures provide succinct but highly insightful summary of the role played by the helpful surrounding geography. The parallels drawn between various civilizations at similar times or thought evolutions are also quite remarkable.

While the lecture series has appropriate length sections on almost all topics including Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Indian, Chinese, Greek, Prussian, Christian, Meso-American, polynesian etc societies, it places relatively excessive emphasis on the Roman times while far shorter on the Arabian development.

Overall, a course that has a lot to offer.

Excellent course!

I highly recommend this course to anyone wishing to obtain a solid foundational understanding of ancient world history. It is well-taught, entertaining, and informative.

The course was perfect for someone like me--I love history, but have long felt that my general awareness of the timeline of world civilizations was lacking. Now that I have taken the course, for the first time in my life I have a solid understanding of how the world's greatest civilizations fit together, what made them great, and when and how they rose and fell.

The course is entertaining and engaging. I connected with the professor, who was young, dynamic and personable. He laid out the information in an easy-to-follow style that contained both depth and focus. The course was dense enough that after time had passed I found myself opening the course booklet to remind myself of details from previous lectures, but it was well taught so that even without the details I easily retained the gist of the material.

The course focused especially on western civilizations, dwelling in more detail on ancient Greece and Rome (including the Byzantine empire). It also included lectures on ancient China, India, the Americas and Polynesia, though those were fewer. I appreciated the professor's commentary on the nature of historical information: he was good about stating caveats about what we know vs. what we don't know, mentioning when certain theories are still being debated, and describing broad trends such as history's tendency to focus on urban culture.

This was the first Great Course I have ever taken and it has prompted me to seek out more of them. In addition, though I obtained this course from the library and have already finished it, I liked it so much that I plan to purchase it so that I can watch it a few more times later on and so that I can own the very useful course booklet. Highly recommended!

Very Good Survey Course

This is a survey course on the history of the ancient world from the beginning of civilization through the 9th century. Looks at European, Asian, American and some African civilizations. The course draws interesting comparisons between the Chinese and Roman civilizations. A major point is that ancient civilizations still strongly influence many aspects of modern life. Something I had not seen before, was the idea that the Arab conquests changed the focus of European history from the Mediterranean to inland cultures.

This fascinating, thought-provoking study discusses the central role of sleep in our lives. After probing the scientific literature, Wiley and Formby, researchers at the Sansum Medical Research Institute, conclude that "the disastrous slide in the health of the American people corresponds to the increase in light-generating night activities and the carbohydrate consumption that follows." Our internal clocks are governed by seasonal variations in light and dark; extending daylight artificially leads to a craving for sugar, especially concentrated, refined carbohydrates that, in turn, cause obesity. More seriously, lack of sleep inhibits the production of prolactin and melatonin--deranging our immune systems and causing depression, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. The authors prescribe sleeping at least nine and a half hours in total darkness in the fall and winter and switching to a diet low in carbohydrates and high in protein, vegetables, and healthy fats. They support their arguments with 100 pages of notes and by tracing the progression of disease from hunter-gatherers to our high-tech society. Despite its somewhat strident, all-knowing tone, this illuminating work is highly recommended for academic and public libraries.

The lightbulb put us out of sync with nature. Way back when, people spent the summer sleeping less and eating heavily in preparation for winter because light triggers the hunger for carbohydrates. Now, with light available 24 hours a day, we gulp down food all year long. So, Wiley and Formby assert, it is light, not what we eat or whether we exercise, that causes obesity--and diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Indeed, eating bacon, ham, butter, and eggs for breakfast doesn't impair health, and exercise can make you fat. If we considered our waking periods as equivalent to the long days of summer and the short ones of winter, we would avoid those health problems. Wiley and Formby offer three steps for improvement, but they aren't optimistic, because the light-driven speed and intensity of contemporary life may be too much to overcome. Still, try, first, plugging the leaks in your psyche; then, because you will have lost weight, resisting carbohydrates; and, finally, swallowing a few pills and helpful foods. William Beatty

T.S. Wiley is an anthropologist and medical theorist with a background in investigative journalism, currently working in medical research with a special interest in endocrinology/evolutionary biology. Bent Formby holds doctorates in biochemistry, biophysics, and molecular biology. Their research has been presented at national and international medical conferences, and in scientific journals.

Finally, a health book that makes real sense

That somebody who wrote a long, very negative and seemingly well-argued review did a disservice to potential readers. I almost did not buy this book because of that review. Thankfully, another preson rebutted him later. I was saved. I bought this book and it turned put to be among the most informative, profound and most helpful book I have ever read. This book carries and urgent message for policy makers and for all of us. Finally, there is something that makes sense in the turbid bowl of soup we call our health system.

Kudos. Must read.

Sugar is the Problem, Not Fat

I have reread this book at least five times. I bought it as a physical book and as a Kindle. There is so much information to digest, I refer back to it constantly. What I find fascinating is that this book was written in 2001 and every year since the studies are coming out to confirm the author's findings. Many people do not want to believe that lack of sleep or a diet high in sugar is problematic. I was a dietician in the 1980's and sugar was not the villain, it was fat. Now we know that sugar is the problem, not fat. But in 2001, T.S. Wiley was sounding the alarm that the food companies did not want you to hear (low fat diets are their mantra.) The information in this book is even more relevant today. I highly recommend it.

Must read! Excellent book, sobering and witty.

This is the wittiest book on the subject I've come across in a while, perhaps only appreciated by those with a healthy dose of humor. It had me in stitches at the funny anecdotal snippets, made reading this book all the more quicker than I otherwise would. I just loved the bit about the poor Mom cooking dinner for her kids after a full day's work and needing a glass of vino to get through it, and 2 glasses if she had to use up some of the recommended food groups.

On a more serious note, this was an eye opener for me as I'm a perpetual night owl surviving on too little sleep too often. It definitely inspired me to make some changes. No doubt it'll be hard but I think well worth it in the end. I would recommend this book to anyone who thinks that sleep is just a waste of time as this will help you better understand how important this is to your health - more than any other factor the medical profession would have you believe, like genetics or food or whatever.

Do it yourself, don't hire a financial advisor

People say that investing is complex and confusing and that you need to hire a financial advisor to help you on investing your money for a comfortable retirement. After reading this book, I found that much of what you hear from the financial industry is wrong and is designed to confuse the retail investor. The truth of the matter is that investing your money is not complex and that you do not need a financial advisor. If you listen and follow the advise from much of the professional investor class about where you should put your money, you would be making them rich at the expense of your savings. John Bogle is doing us retail investor's much needed truth about how to manage your money and has the roadmap and proof to tell us, what most others in the industry has long kept silent and a secret. The truth to investing is that it is not secret, do it yourself, it is not complex, and don't listen to the advise of professional portfolio managers who are out to take your money while pretending to have your back, they don't because it is at their expense. Go with Bogle's folly, read the book, and follow the wisdom in it, and you will do better than 96% of all funds managed by the portfolio managers.

sometimes simplicity must be exhaustively explained to be believed

this is *the* book to read on mutual funds. it's a hefty tome coming in at 600+ pages, but fear not. this book does not read like a dry financial report. bogle is opinionated and his writing flourishes with reminders of his personality amidst the endless but important charts and tables. to spice things up, bogle makes references to a wide variety of sources including shakespeare, thomas paine, scripture and even hegel! by the time you're done, you'll know *everything* you've ever wanted to know (and more) about the mutual fund industry, all straight from the founder of the vanguard group himself. for those afraid of the size of this book, perhaps check out bogle's "little book of common sense investing" instead and then come back to this book if you want more details.

bogle's main message is that costs do matter and simplicity is the best way to avoid costs. the recommendation is to buy low cost broad-based index funds that will outperform the vast majority of actively managed mutual funds in the long run. notice by the definition of "average" that the average investor will get average market returns minus fees and taxes. notice the low cost broad-based index fund gets average market returns minus *minimized* fees and taxes. the index investor will thus outperform the average investor in actively managed mutual funds given all the extra costs associated with active management. also notice that the margin of victory from indexing will compound over the years and will lead to an even greater index fund performance in the long run. that's the gist of why indexing works. if you're not convinced, read bogle's book!

even if you've already read some of the other great passive investing books espousing the virtues of indexing, you still owe it to yourself to read at least one of bogle's books. "common sense on mutual funds" is both readable as well as comprehensive, and would be a good addition to your library. burton malkiel, rick ferri, william bernstein, larry swedroe and others have all written excellent books on the subject as well, but they also hold differing opinions on the specifics, so read all of these authors! i was already convinced on indexing after first reading malkiel's book, but continued reading more on passive investing to work out all the details. these books as a whole help reinforce the main ideas while also exposing the reader to the authors' differences in perspectives, thus building confidence in the reader to think and succeed as an independent d.i.y. investor.

of particular interest to me was the issue of small-cap value tilting. i was ambivalent on this practice, but bogle's book convinced me to *not* small-cap value tilt. readers who already know what small-cap value tilting is should feel free to skip to the next paragraph. now, for those unfamiliar with the terminology, stocks are divided according to size (small-cap, mid-cap, large-cap) as well as style (value, blend, growth). the size refers to the company's size as measured by its market capitalization, i.e. the number of shares multiplied by the price per share. the style is another way to partition stocks according to certain numbers such as price/book ratios and dividend yields; there's no agreed upon standard that's universally accepted for what constitutes a value/blend/growth stock. informally, you could think of value stocks as those that are not currently favored by the market for whatever reason. at the opposite extreme, growth stocks are "hot" stocks that scream potential. blend stocks are in between value and growth. given 3 sizes and 3 styles, there are thus 9 size-style combinations. according to research done by professors fama and french, small-cap value stocks significantly outperform the other 8 size-style combinations in the long run. the problem is, small-cap value stocks make up about 3% of the total stock market. small-cap value tilting means overloading on small-cap value stocks to try to capture the bonus identified in the fama/french research, but that also means underweighting 97% of the total market and potentially missing out if the other 8 size-style combinations outperform small-cap value. you see the dilemma.

bogle's repeated message of simplicity, as well as his emphasis on reversion to the mean, ultimately convinced me to resist the temptation of small-cap value tilting. bogle's unwavering conviction in the simple serves as a necessary component in the chorus of voices, helping to guide your investment decisions, even on the more esoteric matters. and although the message of simplicity is easily stated, i am glad bogle wrote a comprehensive text because the details illustrating the majesty of simplicity is what finally settled the small-cap value tilting question for me.

this book's huge size and scope definitely has its drawbacks, not the least of which is the sheer intimidation factor. nevertheless, i believe this book does serve a useful role in the catalog of passive investing, and bogle was the only one who could've written it.

Essential For Those Who Manage Their Own Funds

If you intend on managing your own investments (which I recommend over paying brokers who are essentially commission sales people), this is an essential tool. I bought my first copy about 10 years ago along with several other books. Basically this is the bible for investors who manage their own investments. I believe this is my third purchase of this book with two of them purchased as gifts for family and friends. We have made a lot of money managing our own investments and this book by John Bogle was a big help.
