About the Author

Andy Oram is an editor at O'Reilly Media, a highly respected book publisher and technology information provider. An employee of the company since 1992, Andy currently specializes in free software and open source technologies. His work for O'Reilly includes the first books ever published commercially in the United States on Linux, and the 2001 title Peer-to-Peer. His modest programming and system administration skills are mostly self-taught.

Greg Wilson has worked on high-performance scientific computing, data visualization, and computer security, and is currently project lead at Software Carpentry (http://software-carpentry.org). Greg has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Edinburgh, and has written and edited several technical and children's books, including "Beautiful Code" (O'Reilly, 2007).

A very important book

I'm going to go on record and say that this is one of the most important books about software development that has been published in the last few years. It's easy for many of us in the industry to complain that software engineering research is years behind practice and that it is hard to construct experiments or perform studies which produce information that is relevant for practitioners, but fact is, there are many things we can learn from published studies.

The editors of this book do a great job of explaining what we can and can not expect from research. They also adopt a very pragmatic mindset, taking the point of view that appropriate practice is highly contextual. Research can provide us with evidence, but not necessarily conclusions.

Beyond the philosophical underpinnings, 'Making Software' outlines research results in a variety of areas. It gives you plenty to think about when considering various approaches on your team. The chapter 'How Effective is Modularization?' is worth the price of the book alone.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn how to think rigorously about practice.

Good, but not fantastic

This is an important book and it covers a wide range of topics surrounding software engineering (comparing languages, whether TDD works, open source vs. proprietary, pair programming, metrics, learning to program, women in computer science and much, much more). But I can't give it a 5 star review because I wish it had been distilled down from a large collection of essays to a single book covering the conclusions and the data behind the conclusions.

It would be a 5 star if someone like Steve McConnell had taken the entire contents of the book and written a single coherent text from it. As it is the quality of writing and explanations varies a lot from article to article. For example, in some of the articles the authors decide to show us the code or the SQL statements used to extract data. I found this distracting (who cares how they pulled data from a database?) because I wanted to get to the meat of each piece. I suspect the book could be 1/2 to 2/3 the size it is today with a rewrite.

Despite my reservations this is a very worthwhile book. If you sit down to read it you'll likely find it hard going in places: it's dense and detailed. But that goes somewhat with the territory. This isn't a book about evangelizing the latest development fad, it's about hard data on what does and does not work in software engineering.

Refreshing, if a bit long.

Ask Felgall - Book Review

Thirty articles and thirty four different authors but you can't really tell that from reading the content as all of the material fits together extremely well.

The articles are divided up into two sections. The first covering general principles reads a lot like a fairly advanced university level textbook and it got really tempting for me to give up on the book a number of times while reading that section which would have been a real pity since the second section covering "Specific Topics in Software Engineering" is far easier to read and a lot more interesting as well.

There is plenty of material in the second section of the book that will help any programmer to improve the way that they write programs. A lot of the alternatives presented are beyond the control of the programmer though and so it is far more important that the managers in charge of programming departments be made aware of the information that this book provides.

While at least some of the information that the book presents should be obvious to any experienced programmer - some of the information may also be completely unexpected. The authors of the articles have done an excellent job though of specifying exactly how they obtained the data upon which their conclusions are based and so it should be reasonably easy to work out just how applicable each should be to any given situation.

I recommend that those without the background to fully understand the material in the first part of the book persevere with it as whatever part of it that you do manage to comprehend will aid in your understanding of what the extremely useful second part of the book actually means.

Another Great Addition to 3013

Every once in a while you get hooked on a series that just won't let your mind go. 3013 is one of those series. The books can be read alone but it is advised to read them not only to get a better grip on the world you step into but to watch the characters evolved. The heroine (Maya) has grown within this series and it has been a delight to read. A small female from a powerhouse chocked full of Alpha males she handles herself well. This books shows that there are all kinds of strength even in the understated. But what can you expect when she is paired with three very individual Alpha Males. The only question I have for this series is when can we kill the villain and can we make it very painful???? * Personal Note* - I am one of the lucky people to be apart of Ms. Roma's Renegades. This means I get the book for free for an honest review. I buy the books after reading them because I want my support of this author to help her continued success in writing. If you have not read any of this series (authored by several talented women) give it a try and see what has become of Earth as we have known it. It is a fun ride.

Mya has been protected her whole life, almost to the point of being suffocated. She convinces her parents to let her open a new store on New Vega. They reluctantly agree, but only if she takes her security detail. Ryland, Mikal and their mate, Pia, are more life family then Mya's personal guards, so she agrees. Arriving on New Vega, Mya is so excited to be on her own. All she can think about is she's finally able to spread her wings and be free to do what she wants. That is until she meets the three Alpha Krytos brothers that own New Vega.

Although all three Krytos are considered the Alphas of their pack on New Vega, Maddox is considered the leader. Tavius is the charming diplomat, and Daimon is the quiet one who gets things done. The brothers are sexy as hell. They work hard and have no time to think about finding a mate......that is until they lay eyes on Mya, the beautiful human. They will stop at nothing to keep her safe, but they almost lose her when evil arrives on New Vega.

This is the first book by Laurie Roma that I've read. I have to say I'm impressed. Since 3013: Genesis is the 11th book in the series, I thought I might not be able to follow the story. So, not the case. Ms. Roma gives you enough history about the characters you have no problem following the story. I was so intrigued with the different types of species that I'm going to start reading books 1 - 10. If all her alpha men are as sexy as the Krytos brothers, I'm in for a lot of hot reads. I have a feeling Jax's story was a super hot read :)

Meh. The story was less intense then others in the series but what do you expect with a 18-20 year old virgin who mates three men scared of making her scared.

About the Author

Vlado Damjanovski is an internationally renowned CCTV expert. He was born in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia, and since 1987 he lives in Sydney, Australia. Vlado has a degree in Electronics Engineering from the University “Kiril i Metodij” in Macedonia, and he has specialized in Television and CCTV. His Thesis in 1982 was on CCD Cameras, 10 years before they became commercially available.

Vlado is an author, inventor, a lecturer and a CCTV expert, known to the Australian and international CCTV industry.

A summary of the ever-evolving CCTV knowledge that Vlado possess first appeared in 1995 in his first published book - called simply "CCTV." This was one of the first truly complete reference manuals on the subject of CCTV. All subsequent editions, 1999, 2005, and the latest in 2013, have kept expanding with all the new and ever-evolving technology. The books cover all that a CCTV specialist needs to know. Many have referred to the book as “The CCTV Bible,” so that even the official Russian translation of it carries such a title.

In addition to writing books and conducting seminars, Vlado is involved in designing and commissioning CCTV systems, often pioneering new trends and technologies. One of the world first digital CCTV system designs was done by Vlado for the Star City Casino in 1997, where gaming disputes are sorted out immediately at the gaming tables. Then, in 2003, another new design was proposed for the Sands Casino in Macao - first in the world utilizing digital matrix switching of over 1,200 cameras and digital recorders.

Vlado was the editor and publisher of the international magazine “CCTV focus,” from 1999 till 2006.

Vlado is currently the chairman of the CCTV Standards sub-committee of Australia and New Zealand, and he has contributed immensely in creating the latest Australian and New Zealand CCTV standards known as AS4806.1, AS4806.2 and AS4806.3.

The CCTV test chart and the programmable test pattern generator are some of the original and unique products developed by Vlado and his company, and they are used in various measurement and quantifying CCTV system performance.

Vlado is also known for his photographic works, albeit as an amateur. He has prepared a number of sole exhibitions in his native Macedonia as well as Australia, published his work in many magazines and books, and won numerous awards (www.damjanovski.com).

I'm still reading but am very satisfied with this book. There's some info that's a little outdated, like the chapter on video tape recorders which I haven't used in years. But over all a complete source for the cctv installer or designer. You'll find yourself referring to it again and again.

What Happened to Eve Durand?

Don't let yourself be fooled into believing this is just a simple dinner party murder. There is infinitely more at stake. The victim? Sir Frederic Bruce, famous Scotland Yard Detective and on the trail of the most elusive woman you will ever meet. Is it possible to find the truth behind these lies, buried in the dust of fifteen year old crime that also must be solved? Count on Charlie Chan to find the answer!
The book's plot is not the one thing that drws you in, but Biggers writing as well, told with a mix of humor, drama and always with a familiarity that makes this an easy, quick and completely enjoyable read and leaves you craving more!

Underrated Mystery and Hero

I just read a copy of this book that I got from the Enoch Pratt branch of the Maryland State Library System. Prior to this I had watched the 1929 version of the story as part of the Charlie Chan DVD series. The film was an extremely bad attempt at portraying Earl Derr Biggers' book and character Charlie Chan. This book could easily be made into a mini-series along the lines of Miss Marple, Poirot, Foyle's War or any of the Mystery episodes long part of PBS. I could see Chow Yun Fat in the Charlie Chan role and the making of this book as a period piece along the lines of the great British Mystery series of the past 30 years. It would be an opportunity to make a more realistic rendering of this character which has suffered from Hollywoodization since the 1920's, Warner Oland's efforts notwithstanding. The story takes place primarily in San Francisco of the 1920's and a good screenplay showing the underrated genius of one of America's great detectives could be a very worthwhile task. This book provides the meat. Time to give Mr. Chan his due.

Old-fashioned Mystery and Romance

Charlie Chan is in romantic San Francisco in Behind That Curtain. Earl Derr Biggers wrote in a style which lent itself to romance as well as mystery. Perhaps only M.M. Kaye blended the two as perfectly as Biggers. Once embarked on this Chan adventure, one feels the trade winds of Hawaii calling our detective back to Honolulu for the birth of his 11th child. Yet the romance of a misty San Francisco still filled with the orient beckon him to stay and solve just one more crime. Behind That Curtain has so much atmosphere it washes over the reader like a sudden rain shower. Fortunately, we are in the most lovely of 1920's cities, with cable cars and quaint bungalows for shelter. Dark passages and murder do exist here, however, and we can consider ourselves lucky that the elegant Chan has stayed over to guide us away from danger.

Bill Rankin is a reporter with the idea of bringing together the visiting sleuth from Honolulu and Scotland Yard's Sir Frederic Bruce. Their stories of crimes solved will make a good feature. But it is Frederic's regrets in connection to an unsolved murder, and the seemingly unrelated disappearance of Eve Durand from India nearly 15 years prior that haunt the conversation. Barry Kirk and the pretty young D.A. he's immediately smitten with, June Morrow, plead for Charlie to stay when Sir Frederic is murdered. There are as many suspects to ponder over as there are mysterious clues. But which is that elusive 'essential clue' so beloved by Scotland Yard?

Charlie wants none of it, and only once onboard the S.S. Maui, of the famous Matson line, does an overheard conversation in an adjoining cabin have the Chinaman rushing down the gangplank to join Barry and June. They must all contend with Captain Flannery, however, whose methods are as heavy-handed as Charlie's are subtle. Charlie discovers evidence of two other missing young women, and suspects a possible connection to the unsolved Hilary Galt murder. How does a world famous adventurer fit into the picture? Are the slippers the essential clue, or something else? In the end, it is of course our favorite detective from the Islands who realizes the clue has been there all along.

The mystery is as much fun as racing down Nob Hill in a 1920's roadster in search of a clue. There is an innocence to the romance between Barry and June borne of another time. Chan is at the top of his game here, both funny and wise. The final scenes hold both humor, and inevitably, as was Biggers' custom, a dash of the romantic. This Charlie Chan is great fun and has one of the most charming endings of any Biggers wrote. A must read for those who like their mysteries old-fashioned, and a bit on the romantic side.

About the Author
Mikhail Bulgakov (1891 - 1940) was born and educated in Kiev where he graduated as a doctor in 1916. He rapidly abandoned medicine to write some of the greatest Russian literature of this century. After a lifetime at odds with the stultifying Soviet regime, he died impoverished and blind in 1940, shortly after completing his masterpiece, The Master and Margarita. None of his major fiction was published during his lifetime.

Hilarious, Terrifying, and Just Plain Brilliant

I've always been a fan of Russian novels, ever since I read my first Dostoevsky novel at the age of 10...(okay, it was a Classics Illustrated comic book version of Crime and Punishment!)but had never run across anything by Bulgakov until a few years ago. A Russian friend of mine really pressed me to read the book. I bought it, but it just stayed on the shelf until a few weeks ago. All I can say is, I didn't know what I was missing. Master and Margarita is a wickedly funny, sad, frightening, and ultimately haunting masterpiece of fiction.
Bulgakov was one of the first generation of Soviet writers who flourished in the 20s, during the short lived Soviet Experimental movement, and then suffered horribly after the stregnthening of Stalin's regime. Bugakov was primarily a man of the Theater, and something of a theatrical quality hangs on to this book. The chapters have an almost tableaux style construction. When the Stalinist purges began, Bulgakov was began work on Master and Margarita, pretty much to please himself. He knew that he would never live to see it published.
The novel itself is nearly impossible to describe. It consists of three separate plots. On the surface is the visit to Moscow, of the Devil in the guise of a professor named Woland, and his henchmen, two grotesque disfigured men, a naked woman and a cat who plays chess among other things. The group proceeds to essentially terrorize the city's intellectual community, mostly by exposing each character's inner hypocracy. The satire of communist society in this section is quite biting, and uproariously funny. Embedded in this story is a "novel within a novel" ...the story of Pontius Pilate and his encounter with the itinerant spiritual man, Yeshua. Finally, there is the story of the separated lovers, the Master and Margarita, who interweave between the other two stories. They live in the present day Moscow, but the Master ostensibly wrote the manuscript which told the story of Pontius Pilate.
This rich and complicated stew of a book works on so many different levels. At it's most obvious, it is a scathing attack on communism and the cultural elite's complicity with the evils of the system. It is also rather pitiless in it's exposure of the greed, corruption and mendacity of human nature. But Bulgakov is not a conventional moralist. The Devil as Woland is an evil figure...sometimes a terrifying figure, and yet he ends up as the instrument of the redemption of both the Master and Margarita. There is a deep spiritual viewpoint at work here...Early in the novel, Yeshua tells Pilate that, "all men are good", to Pilate's incredulity. In the context of the novel, Yeshua seems hopelessly naive, but by the end of the novel, you wonder if this may actually not be the author's central point. Even the devil is capable of some good here.
This book contains a whole world. Characters change in dizzying fasion and events go by with lightening speed. And yet, by the last pages there is a haunting beauty, an almost incandescent light that shines over the prose. Some of these final images stay etched in my brain even now, several weeks after finishing.
I highly recommend that anyone read this book. It may be one of the greatest novels of the 20th century. It certainly is the greatest Russian novel of the last 100 years!

A masterpiece, but choose a right translation�

I am Russian, and have read this novel (which is my favorite Russian novel), in Russian. However, for some reason, a week ago I decided to look through Michael Glenny's translation of this novel and I was shocked by the various little mistakes in the text. In the very first dialog, one of the main characters asks for a glass of Narzan (which is a famous brand of mineral water in Russia), which M.Glenny translates as lemonade. Close, but no cigar...And it goes further like this. That leads me to believe that the translator probably was not familiar with nuances of Russian language, or may be simply didn't care. Nevertheless, I know that it had been the only one English translation available since 1967 and thanks Mr.Glenny for that. Now we have Mirra Ginsburg's more accurate translation (I have checked), which makes me happy. The novel is truly fascinating. A really remarkable person wrote it. Bulgakov was a doctor by profession, he received an exellent education in the pre-Revolutionary Russia and lived through the horrors and turmoil of the Revolution of 1917 and the Civil war. This is a wonderful satire on Communism and a biblical story. This novel populated by very interesting characters, one of them is "unknown visitor" Woland, who is the Satan visiting Moscow with his entourage. Woland is a complex figure, a diabolical seducer, father of lies - the Devil himself, but also "he, who has brought the light" - Lucifer. He laughs at the Soviet Communists, who mistakenly think that they have rooted out all evil and have build a society which is even beyond the good and evil. In the clash with Woland they watch how the "perfect" and godless society crumbles down. Please read it, and you will enjoy it, because the novel goes beyond Russian culture to the world of archetypal characters and events that have meaning to all humans.

where to begin...

I suppose that I can start by saying that "The Master and Margarita" has been my favorite book for over 7 years now (that says a lot since I read quite a bit!). I don't think it is necessary to discuss the plot of the book, since you can read what the book is about by looking at the editorial reviews. However, I will comment on the various translations.
Without a doubt, the book in the original Russian is incomparable, but if you don't read Russian I would recommend the Burgin/Tiernan O'Connor translation. The first translation I ever read was Mirra Ginsburg's - although it is very charming and enjoyable, certain bits of conversation as well as almost an entire chapter are omitted from this translation. I have also read parts of Michael Glenny's translation, and I don't feel that his translation accurately relays the depth, rhythm and richness of Bulgakov's style. Burgin/Tiernan O'Connor has given the most complete and accurate translation of this work. Another superb feature of this translation is the commentary section at the end of the text, which is very helpful in understanding what influenced Bulgakov, and is especially helpful if the reader is not familiar with certain aspects of Soviet culture while the book was written (during the 1930's).
Lastly, I have to comment on the thing that I love most about "The Master and Margarita" - it is impossible to classify this book as one certain genre. This book is a philosophical and religious novel, an historical novel, a satire, a love story, an action/adventure, and a fantasy all rolled into one. Simply put, it is timeless - an original, brilliant and beautiful novel.
