The Devil’s Wingman is a deliciously sexy play on the devil and angel that rest on your shoulders. Sin and temptation become a primal battleground of good vs. evil and the tantalizing gray space between.

PROS:
Kara struggles with depression after the loss of her father. Often she’s in a cloud of thought, sort of removed from the world. Introverted and reclusive, Kara deals with the haunting reality of her past mistakes and the emotions that eat at her soul. A talented artist, Kara expresses herself best through her work, it’s where all of her emotions come to the forefront. Kara is broken but not defeated and it’s through her heart that she finds the will to live again.

Dominic is sin incarnate. A sexy bad boy that puts dark and handsome to shame. Lust and temptation all wrapped into one, Dominic will leave you salivating after him. Between his beast of a car to his domineering, secretive nature, Dominic is forward and playful. Sarcasm, brute force, he’s all masculine power. He pushes and pulls, piquing curiosity. Dominic’s aggression is sometimes scary but balanced with a boyish smile and sweet words that make him a total contradiction. He’s pretty irresistible.

Mystery drives the plot. As Kara struggles to piece all the clues together, foreboding and apprehension brews. Something sinister is on the horizon and it just might change everything.

Cayden is a glowing golden god. He’s considerate, sweet, attentive and looks gorgeous in a tight pair of baseball pants. Cayden is always looking out for Kara and is like a beacon of light leading her to comfort in this strange new university. Safety, comfort, and sticky sweet flirting.

Despite its overall romantic theme, The Devil’s Wingman is a story of loss and recovery, of dealing with the pain of being alive when someone who made up half of you in gone. Kara’s mourning is raw and bleeding, it pours into the story gripping and heartbreaking. There’s a particular scene near the end that you might need tissues for. You’re welcome.

CONS:
More than half the book passes by in a blur of not much happening. The build up is slow and leisurely.

Kara’s lusting after Dominic is borderline stalker obsessive. She can barely function around him and the sheer amount of time she spends mulling over his hotness was a bit much. Intensity overload.

The threat comes way late in the book and while definitely deadly and sinister, wasn’t as horrifying as it could have been had there been more layering into the overall plot. Had the antagonist been introduced sooner, the danger and fear would have been so much more potent. Instead, it escalates quickly and is over too fast.

So, I have to admit-the first half of this book did drag a bit for me. There was so much that was unknown on the paranormal side of things that it made the story feel kind of plain and without focus. Once you pass the halfway point though, the picture starts to get clearer and things pick up.

As for the characters, Kara is my type of young woman (and not because we share the same name, albeit spelled differently). A bit of a loner, but strong in her beliefs and convictions, with a tortured past from which she's trying to move on. She's an easy character to like and feel for. Dominic runs hot then cold, mean then sweet and tender, cruel and evil then loving. Until you get pretty deep into the story, he makes it extremely hard to root for him. Cayden on the other hand is-as Kara's roommate Cassie adamantly observes-a guy that everyone would go nuts for. I have to heartily agree with that assessment.

Until I passed that halfway point and started to really find out the background pieces behind who Dominic and Cayden really are and what drove each of them, I was fully behind Cayden all the way. Once the height of the conflict comes and we see the outcome between Dominic and Kara...well, I could more easily understand and get on board with them.

A story about the battle between light and dark within us, and true love conquering all, The Devil's Wingman did frustrate me at first, but the ending did make up for most of that. Recommended for 18+ due to language and some mild sexual scenes.

but then you get to reading and it’s nothing like what you thought

You know those books, where you read the blurb and you think; 'hey this sounds good', and you sorta get an idea what it’s about, but then you get to reading and it’s nothing like what you thought? Devil's Wingman did that for me. As I was reading, I kept thinking, didn’t see that coming, or had WTH moments. In case you’re wondering, that’s really good.
Kara is starting over her last semester of college, at a new school closer to home. She is that girl, the one that prefers to be alone, doesn’t want a bubbly roommate, isn’t willing to participate in any school functions. Just go to class, and get through the rest of her time.
Well that doesn’t work for her, she gets a bubbly roommate, who will have you laughing, and ends up friends with Cayden, a star baseball player, who has made it clear he is interested in Kara. But all Kara ends up seeing is the dark haired boy in her art class, Dominic. She doesn’t understand why her eyes are always drawn to him, but they are.
This is a good vs evil sort of love triangle. This story went way deeper then I was thinking it would. Very good character development, I was pleased with how this story ended up. I give this 4 MJ stars.

About the Author
Robert S. Feldman is Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences and Deputy Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. A recipient of the College Distinguished Teacher Award, he teaches psychology classes ranging in size from 15 to nearly 500 students. During the course of more than three decades as a college instructor, he has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses at Mount Holyoke College, Wesleyan University, and Virginia Commonwealth University in addition to the University of Massachusetts.

Professor Feldman, who initiated the Minority Mentoring Program at the University of Massachusetts, also has served as a Hewlett Teaching Fellow and Senior Online Teaching Fellow. He initiated distance learning courses in psychology at the University of Massachusetts.

A Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Professor Feldman received a B.A. with High Honors from Wesleyan University (from which he received the Distinguished Alumni Award). He has an MS and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a winner of a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar and Lecturer award, and he has written more than 100 books, book chapters, and scientific articles. He has edited Development of Nonverbal Behavior in Children (Springer-Verlag) and Applications of Nonverbal Behavioral Theory and Research (Erlbaum), and co-edited Fundamentals of Nonverbal Behavior (Cambridge University Press). He is also author of Child Development, Understanding Psychology, and P.O.W.E.R. Learning: Strategies for Success in College and Life. His books have been translated into many languages, including Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese, Korean, German, Arabic, and Japanese. His research interests include honesty and deception in everyday life, work that he described in The Liar in Your Life, a trade book published in 2009. His research has been supported by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute on Disabilities and Rehabilitation Research.

Professor Feldman is president of the Federation of Associations of Behavioral and Brain Sciences Foundation, a consortium of societies that benefit the social sciences. In addition, he is on the Board of New England Public Radio. Professor Feldman loves music, is an enthusiastic pianist, and enjoys cooking and traveling. He has three children, four grandchildren, and he and his wife, a psychologist, live in western Massachusetts in a home overlooking the Holyoke Mountain Range.

Rented this book for the semester and am in love with the fact that I didn't have to buy it a full price and wonder what to do with it after my class ended. It was, however, an interesting book that could be great for referring to if you were going into this field of study. It was just a gen ed course for me, but I still loved the information it shared. Once the semester ended, I had enough time to return the book, which was very simple since Amazon provides you the return label. Definitely rent from Amazon! I can't believe I ever hesitated about it.

If your a student and your class requires you to get the 5th edition of this book, don't get the 5th ed. You will be fine with this edition. It is is pretty much the same thing. The chapters talk about the same thing, same pictures, and exact same words. The only difference i found was that they pretty much cut and pasted the sections within the chapter and put it in a different order, so page number is a little different. But all the sections are in the same chapter. Get this edition if your on a budget. Its the same book different cover. I mean $20 vs. $110?

Beauties in Paradise

Howard Roffman has long been respected for his books that feature the extraordinarily handsome and sensuous models from the famous organization called Bel Ami. For this project Roffman left his San Francisco headquarters and set out for a shooting on the isle of Bali, taking with him four amazingly striking lads - gymnast Adam Archuleta, racing enthusiast Andre Boleyn, the smart and endowed Jack Harrer and the new Czech model Kevin Warhol. Lukas Ridgeston served as the official videographer.

What Roffman celebrates here is the beauty of the land and the atmosphere of Bali and places his models in this scenic paradise where a lot of things happen - surfing, sightseeing, swimming, involvement with the island animals, and of course lots of preening and interaction with each other. There is an inherent innocence in the postures of these young men and Roffman captures that quality, making the very intimate scenes sensuous and fresh. As with all of Roffman's collections, this set of images honors the transcendent beauty of youth - playful, longing, tender, and romantic. Grady Harp, September 12

I love the cover shot but all the pages seem to be couples. That's fine, they look good, if terribly young. I'll give this to some young couple and hang up my Bel Ami calendar.

Exploring these ideas of estrangement within the contexts of earlier, contemporary, and later critical theory, Robinson argues that Shklovsky and Brecht follow Tolstoy in their efforts to fight depersonalization by imbuing readers with the transformative guidance of collectivized feeling. Robinson's somatic approach to literature offers a powerful alternative to depersonalizing structuralist and poststructuralist theorization without simply retreating into conservative rejection and reaction.

Both a comparative study of Russian and German literary-theoretical history and an insightful examination of the somatics of literature, this groundbreaking work provides a deeper understanding of how literature affects the reader and offers a new perspective on present-day problems in poststructuralist approaches to the human condition.
