unexpected response

I am in the midst of exploring and learning about Traditional Witchcraft. Having read several books now, I sort of expected some similar information. But I got quite an unexpected response while reading this book ie the authors words spoke to a part of me on a very, very deep level. This is not a scholarly, academic book. Nor is it a book about modern Wicca. It is a book written by someone who is in contact with the Old Ones.

The author's paradigm disguised as Tradtional Withcraft.

Coming from Pendraig publishers comes a book that is stream of consiousness writing that delves deeply into British Witchcraft. It is supposedly about the old forest craft practiced by the EuropeaN Witches of old. I read the book through and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Read it through and you will definitly get somthing out of it, something you can use. The book is not without flaws if you could call them that.

The book has no bibliography whatsoever so this is defintely not scholarly material. Does that mean you cannot learn from it? Well of course not. While the author goes on to claim that this is the old forest craft i have found in her pantheon of deities several Egyptian Gods and Godddess. Funny I was not aware that the Europeans ever worshipped Egyptian deities in the forest. Now had the author gone on too state that this was her custom and practice, a tradition she came up with, then I would be cool with that. just call it like it is.

Pendraig Publications, mmmm I have heard some negative things about the whole outfit in genreral. having your book published by Pendraig is not a plus. Yet, there are some authorities on British Witchcraft who are getting their books publihed by Pendraig.I guess it is hard finding someone to publish good books on Witch Craft.

Now bear in mind that while the author has come up with her own paradigm there is stuff you can use. There is a good discussion on Witch blood and the origin of witches. She also gives a good discussion on invoking deities andd some of the rules of British witch craft. After all her whole thing is primarily baased on British witch craft. I found the formula for invokinng deities to be rather useful if you are willing to take things apart and use what is useful. Britsih witchcraft is a witch craft that is meant to be practiced with a magical partner. many of us do not have magical partners so the invokations may have to be modified.

Here is some stuff that others have found useful. THe talk of Witches Mountain where the witches dance and feast it is the center of all things yet the form that it it will take depends on what you bring to it, expect from it and what you want to see. Individual perception is everything and it differs from person to person. While you are in Benevento, Blockula ( names for witches mountain) the deities, fae and witches will be playing games which efffect this world and all other worlds. THe game creates a pattern which enable the witch to access the divine.

The author speaks about identity as well. It is stated that if you lose your identity, your true name then you risk becoming non existent. It is important to know who we are een from a psychological standpoint or we can disappear right beffore our own eyes. The withces identity is hidden they have hidden so well that they in effect have dissappeared. Their DNA is mixed with ours yet i order to do magic we have to remember so we can awaken the blood.

The withces main power is pure altruistic love. THe witches came down to help humanity. THe covens are meant to help societies reconnect to the land and nourish it and in turn be nurished by it.

I read this book on Amazon kindle for only $5.00. For a price like that you really cannot go wrong. if you are looking for books on British witch craft I mean authentic Traditional British Witchcrafft there are better books out there. For further reading one should refer to Capall Bann Publishers they have very authentic book. Of course to really learn Traditiona; Britsih witch craft one needs to join a coven or find a legit teacher. Remember in this book you are getting someone else's paradigm.

She convinced me

In the first few pages I too thought that maybe she made this up just to write a book but I soon changed my mind. As I got further into it I was convinced it was honest. One reason why was that the information was "channeled" or "recaptured" by a coven not Ms. Cummer alone. Another reason was the Basque connection (see The Roots of Witchcraft by Michael Harrison). I don't see a lot of modern Wicca in it as another reviewer did. I have always believed in the European Gods (support your local Gods). The kicker came near the end with the following quote "...the pain of living within the bounds of a desert-born religion which was never really ours to begin with nor ever really could be entirely, because it's symbols were not born where we were born, anymore than it's Gods were."

About the Author
Lawrence S. Brown (Ph.D, Princeton University) is a Senior Lecturer and coordinator for the general chemistry for engineers course at Texas A&M University. He received his B.S. in 1981 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his M. A. in 1983 from Princeton University. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow from 1986-88 at the University of Chicago. His research activities include active learning and use of technology in education and integration of chemistry with other subjects in the engineering curriculum. His current efforts are in (i) continued development of the CHEM 107 curriculum, (ii) improving uses of technology in chemical education, and (iii) incorporation of active learning strategies into large classroom settings. These efforts are brought together with the Foundation Coalition, an NSF-supported effort to implement a new model for the education of engineering students. Larry also monitors the CHEM 107 course for Texas A&M's campus in Qatar in the Middle East and has traveled there numerous times.

Tom Holme (Ph.D, Rice University) is a chemistry professor at Iowa State University and Director of the ACS Examinations Institute. He is active in both computational chemistry and chemical education research and has been involved with the general chemistry for engineers course at both Iowa State and the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Some of his recent publications include: "Designing Chemistry Practice Exams for Enhanced Benefits: An Instrument for Comparing Performance and Mental Effort Measures," (Karen Knaus, Kristen Murphy and Thomas Holme), Journal of Chemical Education, 2009, in press; "Nanoscience Items for Standardized Exams in the Undergraduate Chemistry Curriculum" (Thomas Holme), in Nanoscale Science and Engineering Education: Issues, Trends and Future Directions, ed., A.E. The book was in great condition but couldn't use it because it didn't come with an online access code. Need the online access because professor uses online access for all homework and other communication.

Good Book For People Looking To Attain Chemistry

This a good book.

The book throws out a majority of the concepts without over-wording things, if you know what I mean. The book is much smaller than other books, and gets all the right information in the right order.

I guarantee, if you like chemistry, you will like this book. I have enjoyed the book thus far, though I try to use it fairly little to keep down the wear on the edges due to this book not being hard-cover.

Suspenseful Page-Turner Crime Thriller!

SUMMER OF THE DEAD by Julia Keller, is part of a series as the third installment (Bell Elkins Series #3) and boy oh boy, is Bell is in the middle of all sorts of problems— crime, mystery, and high drama in the old mining town of Acker’s Gap, West Virginia.

As Bell returns to her Appalachian hometown, readers meet bookworm, Lindy Crabtree—a coal miner's daughter with dark secrets of her own—secrets that threaten to explode into even more violence. Her father has more than dementia, a retired miner and as strange as they come, living in the cellar so he can feel as though he is still in a mine (and does not like visitors). All sorts of evil surrounding this household.

In addition Bell’s sister, Shirley is out of prison and is living with Bell. It is difficult to keep tabs on this one, much less control. She feels she owes her sister, after protecting her years ago from an abusive father. Otherwise she may not be where she is now, in her career and life (college, law school, motherhood, public office—none of it could have happened, without Shirley.)

Thirty years have passed since that night, yet even now, when Bell contemplates her sister’s sacrifice, a sacrifice that had consumed so much of Shirley’s life—the prison sentence had been extended again and again by Shirley’s fighting and insubordination and by an escape attempt—Bell is overwhelmed.

However, along with her duties as prosecutor and the gruesome reality of Freddie Arnett’s unsolved murder there is also the fact her daughter would be arriving for a visit (and she is not looking forward to Carla seeing her aunt Shirley in the midst of rebellion, alcohol, cigarettes, and self-pity).

This was my first book by Julia Keller, and looking forward to going back and reading the previous books in the series. The author did an outstanding job of creating a strong connection between sisters and the characters for a positive takeaway, in the midst of this suspenseful and dark page-turner crime thrilling mystery and tragedy—which makes for a satisfying and engaging read, as Bell takes a journey as she deals with her past. (Loved Bell!)

Julia’s acknowledgement included the inspiration for this book, which can be haunting—as SUMMER OF THE DEAD, portrayed the devastating long term effects of these stricken miners. Highly Recommend!

A twisting turning mystery!

Bell Elkins is a county prosecutor for Acker’s Gap, West Virginia. She has her hands full with the investigation of an elderly man murdered in his driveway. She cannot understand why anyone would have a reason to kill him. She is also dealing with her sister’s return from prison. Shirley, her sister, has been in prison for thirty years for the murder of her and Bell’s abusive father. When Shirley returns to live with Bell, there is a lot of friction because Shirley is acting wild and disrespectful to Bell. She is living a dangerous life and Bell is both worried about her sister and angry about her sister’s behavior. But Bell also feels guilty that Shirley’s life took the turn that it did because she was protecting Bell from an abusive father. Bell was able to live the life she has and become the person she is through her sister’s ultimate sacrifice.

There are many different characters that we read about. There is Bell, there is Shirley, and there is Sheriff Fogelsong, who is also a friend to Bell. There is also Lindy Crabtree, who lives in the town and loves books and science above all else. And there is Lindy’s father, who is a ex- coalminer who is suffering from dementia. He lives in the basement, living under tables and amongst limbs and rocks and coal that Lindy has put down there for him. He rarely leaves the basement and never leaves the house. Or so Lindy thought.

Bell Elkins is the character that is the most portrayed and developed. It is her story we learn, her emotions we read about and her hopes and fears we feel. We learn about her determination, her frustrations, her guilt and her loyalty. She is definitely someone you would want to be friends with and you would definitely want to have in your corner. The other characters in the book are also well developed and well rounded. The interactions between the characters are very realistic and add so much to the story.

The author is very descriptive in her writing style. So much so that I feel at times it was a little too much. I feel like it made the book a longer read then it needed to be. I found myself sometimes skimming through paragraphs to get back to the action. To me this was a distraction from the plot and the flow of the story. Other readers may find the descriptive writing of most details in the book a positive aspect of the book.

Where I did like the descriptive writing was the details about the people living in a West Virginia coal mining town. It showed the desperation of these people who no longer have the mines for their economic growth. It also shows the pride these people have and how hard working they are. This desperation and pride where displayed throughout the entire book and I thought this was a great addition to the story. Another area where the description was a plus was when the murders were being described. I felt like I was right there watching the activities happening around me and seeing the aftermath of the killings.

There are a few murders taking place throughout the book and the mystery and suspense are carried out from the beginning to the end of the book. There are so many twists and turns thrown in that I found it impossible to determine the killer. I love when I cannot figure out the mystery, when I think I have it all figured out and then I find out I am totally wrong. That to me is a good mystery/suspense read.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a twisting, turning mystery that is full of suspense. This is the third book in the series and it is the first book that I have read. I feel that it was a stand-alone book and I don’t feel that it was a problem not having read the first two. But i do plan on reading the other two at some point.

Love being back in Ackers Gap

Usually a series gets a bit stale as it goes along. But this one gets better with each new novel. I raced through this, and the ending was shocking yet satisfying. Once again the rural scenery is richly detailed. And I loved being with these characters again. I really hope there are many more.
