Grade 2-4?By following a boy through his day, readers learn how the Wampanoag Indians lived in the 1600s. Their homes, clothing, food, and weapons are shown and explained in the course of the story. Their societal structure is introduced as Tapenum describes each family member's duties and his own desire to become a respected member of his community. Relating the information from his perspective makes it accessible and personal for youngsters. If they do not read the back matter, however, they may not understand that Tapenum is a representative figure, not a real person, and that his experiences are based on conjecture, not fact. The book is successful in showing that kids are kids no matter where or when they live. Large, colorful photographs, taken at a re-created Indian homesite at Plymouth Plantation in Massachusetts, add strong visual impact. The text and pictures both demonstrate good attention to detail. Endnotes explain that much of what is known about the Wampanoags comes from archaeological findings in the area. They also provide background information and explain how history is re-created at the homesite. A glossary gives definitions and pronunciations for Wampanoag words and names used in the story. Waters and Kendall, who showed the lives of Pilgrim children in Sarah Morton's Day (1989) and Samuel Eaton's Day (1993), offer a useful companion book, a study of a Wampanoag Indian boy in the 1620s. Clear, full-color photographs, taken at the Plimoth Plantation historical site in Massachusetts, make this an unusually vivid visual presentation of Native American life. In the fictionalized story, young Tapenum, disappointed that he has not yet been chosen to become a warrior, hunts for food, shoots a rabbit for his mother, and goes fishing with a companion. Later he befriends a wise man, who teaches him about making arrows and learning patience. The story seems a bit purposeful at times in its inclusion of information, but it does a good job of dramatizing what life might have been like for the Wampanoags, who are often studied in elementary school because of their connection with the Pilgrims. This is a wonderful book !

We are big fans of Kate Waters' books about the Pilgrims (Samuel Eaton's Day, Sarah Morton's Day and On the Mayflower). When we discovered "Tapenum's Day", we were thrilled ! I found the 'point of view' from a young Native American boy to be both fascinating and educational, as did my children. We enjoyed seeing this historically accuate slice of life, written from a balanced perspective. I think this wonderful book rounds out the collection, including the other four, that no study of the Pilgrims should be without.

Another great book by Kate Waters. This book shows the daily life of a Native American child during the time of the Pilgrims. This book goes great with Sarah Morton's Day and Samuel Eaton's Day. Also, check out On the Mayflower also by Kate Waters.

Great visuals for the young!

There are only a few books specifically on the Wampanoag Indians suited for pre-K through elementary. While the text it a bit too much for a large group of children in the pre-K range (one on one would be excellent), the photos are great. Please check out Kate Waters other books which are excellent companions to the era: Sarah Morton's Day, Samuel Eaton's Day and the Mayflower.

Awesome! A must Read!

I learned about the existence of this book just as I was desparing that there were no good intermediate or advanced pagan books out there. "Out of the Shadows" was everything I was looking for and more. As someone who has long been attracted to dieties with darker, less nurturing aspects like Sekhmet, Kali, and Coyote, I agree that this book was much needed in presenting paganism without the "good vs. bad" dualism. The left hand path is often misunderstood, and I think this book is a wonderful introduction to it. It is a very psychological, thought provoking view. One will find no pre-made spells or rituals here; Coughlin explores the philosophy and mechanics of magic to help you understand why they work. -Quite a liberating thing!
It is also a joy to read; I really enjoyed the conversational style of writing that Coughlin used. He defines and clarifies several aspects of dark spirituality/goth subculture that I would not normally have read about, such as Vampirism and Satanism. He also goes into depth about subjects that would never see the light of day in other books: blood, pain, insanity, sex magic, curses, and drugs. Always there, though, is a reminder of the need for balance and responsibility. The final chapter on haunting was superb; it made sense of the hauntings that I have experienced and caused me to see them in a new way. This book tops my list of favorite pagan books; I reccomend it to everyone who can handle the subject matter and wants a full course meal in magic.

Dark Paganism from Out of the Shadows

In Out of The Shadows, author John J. Coughlin trys to

rebuild the balance 'Light Paganism' has created. He

gives an easy and understandable description of what

the Darkness and 'Dark Paganism' actually are. Though

the focus of this book is 'Dark Paganism', the author in

no way tries to deny or degrade Light Paganism. In

fact, Coughlin actually describes it's benefits and

necessities in modern paganism.

In his explanation of the Darkness, Coughlin gives

information on "dark siders" including the Gothic and

Vampiric Sub-Culture. He gives a clear and understandable explanation of "The Shadow" in psychological terms, as well as symbols, images, and archetypes associated with darkness. I found the section on dark deities to be especially interesting,

where Coughlin offers information on specific deities

from various pantheons including Celtic,Egyptian,

Greek, and Hindu.

Part Two is an explanation of the nature and structure of magick. This section explains how and why magick works as well as it's limitations and psychological factors. Coughlin takes you through each step of the

spellcasting process by describing what and how to conduct ritual. This section also contains information on psychic abilities, chaos magick, and sex magick.

Out of The Shadows is really two books in one.

It is and exploration of Dark Paganism, but it is also

a guide to magick. Because so many books are focused

on Light Paganism, this text is truly ground breaking.

This book does an excellent job of providing the

seeker with the proper tools to explore yourself. It's

goal is to suggest, if not test, you to personalize

your belief system. You will learn the truth about the Darkness and Dark Paganism. It was an excellent read and I'd

highly recommend it to all Pagans.

Excellent book that will get you thinking

What I like about this book is the author's upfront honesty. this is a book about magickal theory and exploring your dark side. The author never sets out to do a book that's focused on practice. He wants you to critically think and explore the concepts that he touches on, but in a manner that I believe gives a lot of respect to the reader.

Patience is a no-nonsense compassionate hard-working woman whose capabilities are finally recognized and appreciated by the Hero. You will be charmed by the heroine's love for her aunts and the way she protects them from the unpleasant aspects of their current life. You will laugh out loud when the adorable tyke involved in the story sticks out her tongue at the widow stalking our hero! :)

She cooks, cleans and types-my kind of woman.

The reviewer from Decatur, GA has described the plot. This is another good story from Betty Neels. It's just about the same plot--doctor, plain girl, beautiful villan(ess). The descriptions of England, Holland, and the various foods eaten are always interesting. All I can say against it is there is no sex, but that's not why I read Ms. Neels--I read them because most of the time the heroine is plain and she gets the prince.

Clean, Practical, Fun, Cute. Classic Betty Neels.

Patience Martin has two elderly aunts who struggle with the idea that a pound does not go as far as it once did, a manor home she is trying to let to anyone who could afford it, a small town home she is letting from someone else, and few skills marketable in her small home town. At first, prospects seem dim to her, until she learns that a tenant has let the manor home for six months, and is willing to hire her as a liason between his housekeeper and the townspeople. The tenant's dog is agreeable, but the tenant and his housekeeper are not. Fortunately, practical Patience can put up with anything. A snow storm, a manuscript in a poor hand, an adventure in the big city, a trip to the Netherlands, and a disappointment later, life seems no longer so dim.

The overall descriptor for this book is "darling." For those more accustomed to racing hearts and dramatic plot twists, it will seem very vanilla. For those seeking it, it presents a refreshing break from the current tendencies of romance toward erotica.

The pace is very measured. The reader cannot predict very little of what happens, but, as such, the continuity is flawless and the progression highly logical. Though Patience does not experience dire agony, the pain and worry she feels translates as very real to the reader.

There is but one flaw in the book, and it is more a flaw produced by the progression of time than by the story. Anyone who has ever read any Georgette Heyer may have experienced the same thing: the heroine seems to have very little in the way of ultimate control over her circumstances. Now dwelling in a world of self-made men and women, a reader must make an effort to revert to a 1940s and 1950s mindset to avoid asking questions of "Why did she not do/say this?"

Enjoy reading this book. It is quite worth the effort.
