At adolescence, says Mary Pipher, "girls become 'female impersonators' who fit their whole selves into small, crowded spaces." Many lose spark, interest, and even IQ points as a "girl-poisoning" society forces a choice between being shunned for staying true to oneself and struggling to stay within a narrow definition of female. Pipher's alarming tales of a generation swamped by pain may be partly informed by her role as a therapist who sees troubled children and teens, but her sketch of a tougher, more menacing world for girls often hits the mark. She offers some prescriptions for changing society and helping girls resist.

From her work as a psychotherapist for adolescent females, Pipher here posits and persuasively argues her thesis that today's teenaged girls are coming of age in "a girl-poisoning culture." Backed by anecdotal evidence and research findings, she suggests that, despite the advances of feminism, young women continue to be victims of abuse, self-mutilation (e.g., anorexia), consumerism and media pressure to conform to others' ideals. With sympathy and focus she cites case histories to illustrate the struggles required of adolescent girls to maintain a sense of themselves among the mixed messages they receive from society, their schools and, often, their families. Pipher offers concrete suggestions for ways by which girls can build and maintain a strong sense of self, e.g., keeping a diary, observing their social context as an anthropologist might, distinguishing between thoughts and feelings. Pipher, a clinical psychologist who has worked extensively with adolescent girls, convincingly argues that girls today are actually more oppressed than their mothers were because they must grow up in a "more dangerous, sexualized and media-saturated culture." This atmosphere has destroyed the happiness of many teenage girls and has led to a frightening increase in self-destructive behavior. Pipher's descriptions of adolescents' lives--then and now--are particularly well done. Included are thoughtful recommendations for parents and a plea for changing the direction of our culture. All parents with daughters should read this eye-opening work. Highly recommended. BOMC, Quality Paperback Book Club, and Psychotherapy Book Club selections.

The Mom Bible: Reviving Opelia by Mary Pipher

This is the second time I am purchasing this book for myself. The first time I purchased Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls by Mary Pipher, it was because my own daughter was going through a very rough time and I wanted to understand her better and find out if there was something that I could do. I received a great deal of insight and guidance from this book, which goes to great lengths to show the difficulties faced by girls in our society. Between unrealistic magazine ads and unreachable goals and the self-esteem issues of young girls, the author has managed to touch on the sensitive and emotional time this can be for adolescent girls. The reason I am purchasing this book a second time is because I loaned my first copy to a mom who needed it more than I did, and she kept it and relied on it and I'm happy for that. Now, I need this as a text book for a college class and it is required reading. Of course, I love the book and will enjoy revisiting the content. FYI: My two girls have grown up to be women that I am proud of every day. I think this book had something to do with that. Thanks for reading my review. Validating and Helpful

At age 46 and having no daughters but 2 teenage sons, I found this book to be very insightful as to the still present haunts of MY adolescent years. It helped me to understand the disconnect that my 1930's born parents had with my 1980's teenage years. Yes, the book could be said to be "dated" (pre-Internet, etc.) but it doesn't take much thought to project the content forward to our current cultural situation of social media, etc. The concepts would be the same, only intensified. While the perfectionist in me finds it hard to give any non-fiction book 5 stars (I agreed with most but not all of the author's theories), my 4 stars still reflect that this book had significant impact on my life and has inspired me to become a mentor to girls who, much like myself, lost some critical parts of personal happiness, joy and self-esteem in adolescence.

If you have daughters, you must read this!!!!

I don't care who you are, if you have a daughter, you need to read this. Then you need to re-read it.
Any female can tell you that she would never go back to adolescence. It was awful! Imagine how much harder it has gotten.
Our daughters are bombarded by messages that tell them that their entire purpose in life is to be a skinny, attractive, sex object.
Mary Pipher will open your eyes to the subliminal messages all around us, the ones that are damaging our daughters. Then she gives us ideas on how to combat these ideas, how to make our daughters realize where these thoughts of worthlessness are coming from, then how to overcome them through real purpose.
This really is I e if my favorite books. In high school, my English teacher suggested I read it. I didn't back then. Once I had my own daughters, I bough it for my kindle and have read it several times.
Whether we want to admit it or not, our society is hard on women. Look at magazine covers. Women can't have wrinkles, grey hair or cellulite. Men on magazines can have all of these things, because we look at their character. Women's magazines tell us we first and foremost must look good to have any value, then they tell us how to work full time, have a gorgeous house, balance career and family, lose the baby weight like celebrities and be flawless in general. Expectations we will never look up to. Men's magazines have articles on improving sex, meeting women, sports are awesome, bosses suck and more about improving sex.
While we can not fix our broken and biased society, we can arm our daughters with the knowledge that this is out there and then teach them that these messages are wrong.
