Phytochemistry, herbology, ethnobotany, nutrition

This book breaks down the active ingredients found in plants we might chose to use in a home remedy.
My personal opinion is that no herbalist can honestly consider themselves sufficient in quality to meet a need or qualify as an herbal practitioner without this book as their guide.
Granted, it isn't covering every plant chemical, or every plant known to mankind up to date, but it should provide enough information for practical purposes used in the traditional herbalist lair.
However, this book is one of the best guides for the aspiring student of pharmacy, organic chemist and nutritionist.
I believe this book to be a treasure for a clearer understanding in ethnobotany as well.
I would recommend this book to anyone seeking an insider clarity of phyto-chemicals.

Perfect book for serious botanist

Perfect book for serious botanist! Very serious book, for very serious price! Information is detailed, each alkaloid is given 2D formula, brief description of action on human or livestock and plant where it can be found. Also very good reference: by latin name of plant you can quickly find all alkaloid it can contain and it which parts (roots, berries, leaves).

A most comprehensive work.

The term `Liberty Ship' crosses my desk several times each month and yet, as a diver and shipwreck historian of many years standing, I have very little first-hand experience of this type of ship. Built during WW2 partly as a direct measure of compensating for the large numbers of ships being lost to U Boats and partly to enable the United States to move men and equipment all over the world during that same conflict, the actual concept of prefabricated ships was both innovative and very bold when first introduced. The very process of building sections of ships elsewhere and then assembling those parts at the shipyard meant that their very valuable slipways were put to the most economic use and not rendered unusable for launching for months on end whilst a single ship was built from scratch.

With a small number of common designs for tankers and freighters, 18 US shipyards were given over to specifically building these vessels and were soon able to proudly boast that they were producing ships faster than they could be sunk. The record for building a single ship, incidentally, went to the `Robert E. Peary' which was launched at the Permanente No 2 Yard just 4 days and 15� hours after her keel was laid!

In this excellent and most thorough work, the authors have traced both the origins and the history of the Liberty Ship in addition to the details of every one that was ever launched. I was particularly pleased to see all due credit going to the Sunderland (England) shipbuilding firm of J. L. Thompson & Sons and the fact that the early ships were all built to British design. They also included the original shipbuilding programme, war losses and post-war disposal and conversions in an amazing account of how this product evolved. Along the way we learn that during the war some suffered structural failure, many were lost due to war causes and others to accidents, a small number were converted to hospital and troopship duties and, of course, many survived. Some were even used for target practise.

My own hands-on experience is confined to the "James Eagan Layne" which sank in Whitesand Bay near Plymouth on 21 March 1945 after having been torpedoed by U 1195. In addition, I have also researched the ammunition ship Richard Montgomery which sank in shallow water in the Thames estuary in August 1944 when fully loaded with bombs and other ammunition (half of which is still on board!). In spite of meticulous study over many years, I still learned a great deal about that ship from this book.

Following the overall history, we have details of the 18 yards that produced Liberty Ships, the engine makers, types of engine, different design of ships and, of course, who built which ship. With additional information on; Hull design, accommodation, crew, cargo handling, deck machinery, ground tackle, fire protection, navigational equipment, propulsion and the inclusion of line drawings of ships and machinery plus a brief r�sum� of each and every ship listed under the relevant builder, it is easy to say that `everything' appears to have been included.

The work concludes with 9 pages devoted to the ship `Jeremiah O'Brien' and the man after whom it was named. Quite frankly, this is as complete a work on the subject of the Liberty Ship as one might hope to find and I am surprised it has not crossed my desk before today.

Costly Expensive but a must have.

I'm not quite sure why the book costs so much. It may be because it's so old. The information is pretty good. They describe just about every Liberty ever built. There are stats, dates, times, places and everything. Some operational history as well. I would have been happier with a hardcover and more photos. Better photos would help one understand the complex changes made to some ships of the class. The book does not include current status on the 2 preserved ships-Brown and O'Brien since it was written while they were still non operational.

Lots of detail.. A Little Dry

Well I did not think this was going to be a toe-tapper, but it had so much detail on every ship built, I though it could have spent some more attention on the design, crafting, and construction of this series of ships. Still a nice reference piece. I admit I still have more to read.

A THRILLING NOVEL FOR THE FANS

This novel, the adaptation of the horror film, was quite a fine read.
The story: The continuation of part one, right from the second that it ended. The shape, Michael Myers, murdered several teenagers after escaping from a mental assylum the night before. He now follows the sole survivor to the hospital where she is brought. His psychiatrist, Sam Loomis, is hot on his trail.
The characters were extreamely believable and easy to relate to. The drugged up Laurie running from the killer. The psychiatrist slowly going mad in his quest to stop a patient. An unenthusiatic skeleton crew at a nearly abandoned hospital. All were handled well.
The author's prose was excelent. He went into fine detail throughout the novel, giving it a more believable feel. Unfortunately, this detail does not apply to the last few chapters. They seem rather hurried, as if the author just wanted to finish.
The terror, the violence, the suspense...all will appeal to readers whether a fan of the film series or not.

A GREAT NOVEL! SCARY FOR ALL AGES!

I purchased this book at a used book store and was really happy when I found it, considering that it was out of print and a rare collecter's item for Halloween fans. I read it in about a week. There are a few scenes from the book that are in the television version of the movie and there is one extra kill. The thing I liked about this book was that you got very in-depth with the mind of the characters. Jack Martin, the author, does a great job at writing the book. The book could not have been better. It is a great read that I would reccomend to anyone who likes a good old-fashion do not read when you are alone book. It has the same plot as the movie: Escaped serial killer Michael Myers has killed 3 teenagers on Halloween night and then shot six times, but survived. Dr. Loomis, Michael's doctor tracked Michael down before, can he do it again before Michael kills his sister, Laurie Strode. And that's it. Very simple, but awesome!

This novelization of the mediocre sequel to one of the most successful independent horror movies of all time is a mixed bag. It is filled with spooky, late night atmosphere and tries hard to build tension and suspense from the filmsy story delivered by screenwriters John Carpenter and Debra Hill. On some levels it does succeed where the movie failed in sustaining suspense and atmosphere, but the lack of a strong story to anchor the events renders the chills meaningless. Jack Martin is a pseudonym for Dennis Etchison, who wrote the excellent novelization of Carpenter's ghost story classic The Fog.

James Joyce and Imperialism

Anyone inclined to doubt the urgency or force of Spanos' critique could usefully be referred to another recent book, Vincent J. Cheng's Joyce, Race and Empire. In this case the focus of the book, as Joyce's was, is on English rather than American imperial power, but if it's understood that from the end of the nineteenth century the two were for the most part engaged in a common enterprise, the difference is inconsequential. It's the underlying logic that matters.
"(Joyce's)...writings...were most frequently attempts to resist and defy the authorized centrality of canons, empires (especially England), and totalizing structures" (p.3). This is precisely the project that Spanos has attempted, with an argument derived in large part from Heidegger. The arguments of Spanos and Cheng should strongly re-inforce each other, with Spanos helping to provide historical background , depth and theoretical rigor to Cheng's work on Joyce. Readers and admirers of Joyce who understand or suspect the heavily obscured political nature of his project could be well advised to read Spanos to help them understand the background to his work. Readers of Spanos will also learn a great deal from the strong, incisive commentary of Cheng.
According to Cheng the true significance of Joyce's work has been denied and buried in a manner very similar to that which Spanos relates for Herman Melville. The two recent books may help to retrieve both from the oblivion to which they have been consigned.

An important critique of American imperialism

Books like this have been a long time coming. This one says things that are fundamentally important. Lack of this kind of political and historical insight during the Vietnam decade was probably one of the main factors that caused the radical movements and people of that time to lose their way in a fairly short time, so that the radical high-tide of the late 1960s was ebbing away by the early- to mid-1970s and never appeared again, except occasionally. If the Vietnam era served as the crucible from which books such as this eventually came, then those years are still generating a compelling and important legacy.
If readers of this book draw only one general conclusion from it, it probably should be an awareness of how vital an adequate political-historical perspective is for the successful framing and prosecution of any radical, revolutionary or 'counter-establishment' political agenda.
The great virtue of this book is to remind people how long-established and deeply entrenched in Western societies is a logic of imperialism and domination with its accompanying rationalisations and 'justifications', and that a new stage or level of that logic has been achieved recently with the end-of-cold-war 'victory' achieved by the West.
It's also a bit unfortunate that only one response to this book has appeared here in more than a year. Potential readers should know that this book really is worth reading and commenting on.

An important analysis of an historical mind-set

To be more specific than in the previous piece, it could be noted that anyone dedicated to a `counter-hegemonic' project should be aware at the outset how slippery and slithery the discourse of the American political `establishment' has been since it was systematically crystallised and formalised in the latter part of the eighteenth century (most notably with the Declaration of Independence). This discourse relies almost entirely on a series of airy generalities such as life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, opportunity, freedom, democracy, human rights etc etc.
The extent to which this kind of discourse and rhetoric dominates both the public domain and the inner workings of the mind of the American people themselves is fundamentally important for the maintenance of control by a `power elite'. Such a generalised, slippery discourse makes it quite difficult for people to come to grips with the causes, consequences and nature of specific events and policies. For example, if the prevailing, largely automatic popular assumption is that the American political system is at all times dedicated to `life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness' etc, it follows automatically that any repressive or authoritarian policies or legislation can't really be repressive or authoritarian at all; they become necessary expedients to resist or overcome the influence of the enemies of life, liberty etc. In effect, the American political class wrote itself a blank cheque with the expansive, high-minded rhetoric they wrote into the Declaration of Independence, a cheque which they are still able to draw against.
The American people got at least two early warnings about how limited and constrained their rights to liberty and the pursuit of happiness could be, at least when times were difficult. One was the Constitution agreed to at Philadelphia in 1787. This caused such popular discontent that ten amendments had to be added shortly after (the `Bill of Rights'), to calm things down. Then in 1798 the Alien and Sedition Acts were passed. 1798 happened to be a fairly radical year (the Irish uprising, Napoleon in Egypt). Reading the language of the Sedition Act, it is impossible not to notice how English it sounds. These acts were politically similar to the English `Orders-in-Council' of 1792, by means of which the domestic area was made subject to tight discipline for the forthcoming assault on revolutionary France. The politics of the Alien and Sedition Acts confirmed the new American nation as essentially English. The War of Independence therefore can't be thought of as a revolution. What it was was a means to reverse positions with England; instead of England being dominant and America subordinate, the colonies enabled themselves to become the dominant power at a later time. More than a century later as it turned out - around the time of what Christopher Hitchens called `the hinge year' of 1898. Around this time it became clear to the English political class that they would have to resign themselves to playing `second fiddle' to the rising power of the USA. When that stage was reached, each felt free to engage in gratuitous, aggressive wars i.e. wars for which there was absolutely no military necessity (the Spanish-American War and the Boer War). From then on, World War I probably became inevitable.
This perhaps helps to flesh out some of the nineteenth century history which is perhaps not explicitly dealt with in Spanos' book, but which serves as the background which makes Spanos' outline urgent and compelling; the background which, as Spanos explains, Herman Melville was trying to explicate for the American people.
