The chain reaction from the diary's discovery explodes around West Germany, England, and South Africa, uncovering secret alliances and double agents. This first novel, which attempts to fill in history's blanks and to tie the past with the present, has action, characters, and violence to spare. Long but largely rewarding first thriller in which the apparent suicide of imprisoned Nazi Rudolf Hess sets the KGB, the Stasi, the CIA, Israelis, South Africans, and the Berlin police to chasing each other and some embarrassing papers--which may or may not have been written by Mr. Hess, who may or may not have been Mr. Hess. It's the late 80's, and the cracks in the Eastern bloc are just starting to show. Berlin is still controlled by the WW II Allied powers, who've spent millions to keep Hess locked up in Spandau Prison. It was Hess who made the mysterious flight to England at the beginning of the war, supposedly to seek a separate peace through negotiations with sympathetic aristocrats. Now, the prisoner has hung himself. Or has he? He's certainly dead, but it may have been murder. There has always been doubt about his identity--and the Russians have always been strangely adamant about paroling the old fascist. Then, as Spandau is being razed, Hans Apfel, a young German policeman, finds a hidden sheaf of papers written in Latin by the old prisoner, a document that, if released, will prove immensely embarrassing to a number of people, including the British royal family, a good hunk of the British aristocracy, and far too many German policemen on both sides of the Iron Curtain. A long line forms to try to get the papers back from Apfel, who wants to sell them, and his pretty wife Ilse, who wants to turn them in. Things become terribly violent terribly quickly, and Hans has to accept help from his estranged father, the best cop in Berlin.... The central mystery, why Hess went to England and why so many people don't want the truth to get out, isn't quite interesting enough to last the great length here. In these times of heightened nationalism, this story reads like front page news!

Iles is brilliant again as he takes you back through history and into the dark past of WWII. Winding fiction around a spine of facts, Iles creates a story that is so gripping in its realism, you can't separate history from imagination. In light of the current wave of nationalism, racism, and other underlying troubles in our country, it is a good read to remind you of what it looks like when these behaviors get to be extreme. Heroes, heroines, villans and victims, Greg Iles delivers them all in a rollicking adventure story that will have you thinking. The possibility of it all is what will scare you. Enjoy!

GI is a great writer with one flaw in my opinion : too long winded.
The plot is brilliant but the main characters come and go in terms of relevance. There are too many of them! The Russian angle is irrelevant in the end and the chase around Berlin equally so. But criticism is very easy and overall I have enjoyed the book. Recommended.

About the Author
Coach Bill Renner’s football coaching background uniquely qualifies him to understand what coaches and players need to coach and improve their kicking and punting. Coach Renner has 23 years’ of experience as a head football coach and 28 years overall coaching football. He has NFL playing experience and has consulted with college and NFL teams regarding coaching and training kickers and punters. He has coached four kickers and punters from his own team to college scholarships and one who played in the NFL. He has spent the past 30 years coaching and training high school, college and NFL players at his own camps and as a kicking consultant. Coach Renner has written books and articles on coaching kicking and punting techniques and he did his master’s thesis at Virginia Tech on punting. He has researched kicking and punting techniques and refined a kicking and punting training curriculum that over the past 30 years has produce elite kickers and punters. Coach Renner has recently retired from coaching football and is consulting and training coaches and players on football and kicking and punting techniques a full-time basis. Helpful tips teaching kids!

My brother taught me how to kick soccer style when I was a kid and he was a high school placekicker. I always enjoyed it and now I'm teaching my daughter some skills to help her get more power to the ball on goal kicks in soccer. This book helped me use key phrases to remind her of the technique she should be using. We're both kicking more consistently thanks to this book!

About the Author
William Gibson has written plays, poetry, fiction, and an autobiographical family chronicle called A Mass for the Dead. The Miracle Worker, his most popular play, and Two for the Seesaw were both produced on Broadway and made into motion pictures. In 1982 he wrote a sequel to The Miracle Worker called Monday after the Miracle, which was based on the life of Helen Keller as a college student with Annie Sullivan as her tutor and translator. William Gibson now lives in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where he co-founded the Berkshire Theatre Festival.

"The Miracle Worker," a play by William Gibson, has had an enduring presence as a piece of living literature. It appeared on Broadway during the 1959-60 dramatic season, was made into a motion picture a couple of years later, and then was remade as a television movie for the 1979-80 season. The play's genesis lies in the real story of Helen Keller (1880-1968), the woman who was struck deaf and blind by illness at the age of 19 months. "The Miracle Worker" tells how a young Helen was led out of her prison of silence and darkness by the remarkable Anne Sullivan, who set out to teach the girl sign language.
"The Miracle Worker" is a truly great play. Gibson brilliantly takes the historical facts of Keller's childhood (many of which can be found in "The Story of My Life," Keller's 1902 autobiography) and turns them into a suspenseful, profoundly moving piece of theater. Although the core of the play is the fiery relationship between Sullivan and the wildly undisciplined Helen, Gibson's drama takes in the entire Keller household. I was particularly moved by the relationship between "Miss Annie" and Helen's frustrated but devoted mother.
"The Miracle Worker" is remarkable because much of the story is told not in dialogue, but in Gibson's stage directions. This is one of those plays which is not only powerful in performance, but also a gripping read.
Gibson's play is one of those great examples of a drama that takes real American life stories and turns them into enduring art; in that sense, it is comparable to such great works as "The Crucible," by Arthur Miller, or "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail," by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee.
"The Miracle Worker" is not only a compelling human drama, but also a reflection on courage, love, education, and the transcendent power of language. As an interesting complementary text, I recommend Octavia Butler's science fiction story "Speech Sounds" (which can be found in Butler's book "Bloodchild and Other Stories").

Necessary Reference for Your SharePoint 2010 Farm

It is good from time to time to acquaint yourself with Microsoft best practices for the development tools/applications which you depend. As a SharePoint developer and administrator I make it a point to keep up-to-date on this subject. While I have read a number of Microsoft's published best practices, this is the first time I read the best practices for SharePoint. Designing Solutions for Microsoft SharePoint 2010 is the first book I read on my new Kindle Fire.

As developers we like to think that our years of experience will allow us to naturally know the best methods to choose when creating a new solution in any new tool or framework. This is not the case. Reality is, a method which works well under one framework may not work under the next. This is why it is important for us to educate ourselves with the best practices for each framework.

For example, you may have used SharePoint web services to interact with SharePoint 2007 via a solution created in Visual Studio 2008. This may not be the ideal method of choice when creating a Visual Studio 2010 solution that will installed within a SharePoint 2010 environment. The recommended method would be to utilize the Client Object Model or the Server Object Model depending on what you wish to accomplish.

If you are creating a new assembly for your SharePoint 2010 environment, should you install the assembly in the bin directory of your SharePoint web application or install it in the GAC? If you don't understand the cost/benefits for each location you might want to review this book.

It is inevitable that there will be a need to pull information from an external data store into your SharePoint 2010 environment.
